Sensible discussion points here, and I'm happy to contribute, but I don't like it!!
The problem for me is that I post things on Media lens board to bring them to the attention of other people, including readers, posters and twitterati. It is vital that the general viewpoint gets out into the public media sphere which we are seeking to influence - or I think we are.
While I do like to engage in discussion, it is often to argue the finer points in support of the viewpoint I consider to be close to the 'truth'.
I'm not sure the forum could achieve this end, particularly if it has less profile and raises less ire...

I think it may prove less conducive to ego-driven or malevolent grandstanding - less easy to use to demand attention and draw eyes to smears. We'll see. Like on said today on the MLMB, I preferred the old forum to the MLMB and came to use MLMB reluctantly at first back in 2005.

Yes, I too have used the old forum a lot, back in the day, for retaining articles, letters etc, and for engaging in extended discussions. But while I still like the format for those kind of purposes, it seems obvious that it has a very different feel and function to a message board. Perhaps, as Joe suggests, being here will help offset ''ego-driven or malevolent grandstanding". But it won't, I think, encourage the kind of immediate and spontaneous rush of information and comment we've seen on the MLMB. Whatever the pros and cons, I guess it serves a useful purpose right now as people deliberate on future arrangements.

My more pressing concern right now is to see the ML message board change over to an Editors only space. As noted at my board message: I hope the Eds might consider, even at some later stage, continuing to use the board as sole contributors. As a readily recognised site visited by much of the public, it could still be used to provide links, comments and images, much like facebook and twitter, but with the obvious elimination of the moderation problem. It might also help to keep people engaged with ML and the site as a whole. I think a lot of people would still value such an easy go-to place for real news and information.

Encouragingly, the Eds have promised to keep such options in mind.

Interesting idea. There is still the issue of multiple places for the Eds to engage - Twitter, Facebook, the forum and the editors-only board you envision. A lot of time is spent duplicating information unless you let one place slide. In my case I am very lax about using my Facebook account. I use it as infrequently as I originally intended to use my Twitter account.

Friends, I don't know where we are on a new message board but I posted this on
Using Iceland as a base if this is at all interesting:

This is from a post I made on the MLMB thread started by Dan:
 http://members5.boardhost.com/medialens/thread/1450791115.html
"Here is some of the stuff extracted from Der's very helpful contribution above:

http://www.orangewebsite.com/domain-registration.php?currency=GBP
.IS domain registration   ( price for    .is £50.72 )

.IS domains are country Top Level Domains (cTLD) of Iceland. By registering .IS domain you will benefit from having your domain registry in Iceland instead of EU or USA. This way your domain is fully protected by Icelandic laws and privacy protection. Iceland is also well known location for being a safe haven for journalists and publishers by protecting their freedom of speech. You may register your .IS domain with us instantly by using our online registration service.

this discussion forum is hosted by orangewebsite as an example : http://dwpexamination.org/

here is another
The Black Triangle Campaign http://blacktrianglecampaign.org

This group is established to galvanize opposition to the current vicious attack on the rights of the disabled by the Government using "Work Capability Assessments" to re-classify genuinely sick and disabled individuals as "fit for work".

"OrangeWebsite gave The Black Triangle Campaign a fantastic opportunity to escape from the corporate legal bullying that was being carried out against us and the service that we have received since transferring our websites to them has been exemplary, we can heartily recommend them."

- Phil Lockwood, United Kingdom

- I say check the system needs through the IT experts in the group and put it to the OrangeWebsite and see how much and when it can be in place - plus get a detailed list of the benefits over using a UK based system.

cheers"

- total up the costs and add up the direct debit sponsors to match then press the go button and see what happens. Can our current IT guru Ollie help in any way here?

PS I see no reason why we can't follow three approaches here:
1. Maintain the current MLMB as an Eds only contribution with or without pre-moderated comments
2. Pursue an alternative Message Board in a user friendly location like Iceland if only as an experiment - if it works keep it and develop it, if it doesn't try something else.
3. Maintain a firm connection to Medialens through this Forum as a fall back position if 1. and 2. fail for whatever reason.

My basic hopes:

1. I hope people can gather in the same kind of community fashion around a new board.
2. I hope it keeps the vital connecting contact with, and spirit of, ML.
3. I hope people will still use the ML forum for the usual purposes.
4. I hope the ML eds continue the MLMB as a dedicated ML only portal for news, links, comment and information.

i think the 3-pronged approach advanced by jwhilley and cj has a lot of merit wrt maintaining connection with eds, with old place, with the aims of ml yet with an independent message board which allows for a freedom of direction as we evolve and insulates the eds from moderation/association/distractions that we rabble [ some more than others/me included here etc] generate from time to time.

i think it would give the editors more freedom to post, should they so wish, not having to wear their "responsibles" hats.

i like the icelandic option should it, after investigation, make sense [ ive been avaoiding .is sites for the last few years thinking it was israeli hosted ;0) ) i think the process and parameters of an icelandic host would be educational and stand the unitiated in good stead for the no-future.

Previously, in this or the other forum thread, I've suggested some contingency planning and emergency moderation until we get our heads round the statutory operating environment. However, i hope it is clear that i believe that ultimately, for a high immediacy, waterfall of rolling narrative correction/question [ narrative-storming] light touch moderation is the best.

an analogy for the mlmb moderation could come from football -

for a good game the ref needs to let the game flow, not respond to every appeal or overly stick to the letter of the laws. constriction is best kept to a safe minimum.

following on from this, looking back, though i have disagreed with some of the editors banning of certain individuals, including to a lesser the recent damaging dramas on the mlmb, their moderation has been rather light and good. it takes a fair time for example, for a suspected troller, to cook their own goose.

anyway, s'looking like this thing might fly

go well

If a new board takes off great, but I think the left generally needs to pool resources and support already existing projects as much as possible. Too often we splinter into small and smaller groups competing for the same limited resources - not just money but people's time and energy as well
