I spent the year leading up to the revolution in Libya building one of 25 new universities. These were being provided by the Libyan Govt. ( Yes - him ) and were going to be freely available to the people.
Seeing what has happened since is frankly heartbreaking. ill-informed 24 hr rolling news channels ( BBC and SKY ) using innaccurate 2nd hand info about a country where they hadn't had correspondents based for years. Why for example did no-one report the "housing" revolution that took place in mid-january ??? So the media act as cheerleaders causing a knee jerk populist reaction by UK Govt and an altogethe more cynical electioneering stunt by Sarkozy. Art this point even the media stepped back realising nothing was on firm ground. reporters finally on the ground talking tripe about the libyan people finally being in touch with the outside world - i used to sit in a schwaerma cafe in Benghazi watching BBC World News on the big cscreen for goodness sake ...... Clearly Gaddafi was very far from perfect but it strikes me that the trajectory in 2010 was looking promising. Can that be said now?
